Still making payments on a car, truck or SUV you want to sell in Calgary? Start with two figures: the vehicle’s appraised value and the lender’s current payout amount. Then confirm how the loan, any remaining proceeds and the vehicle handover would be handled.
Tell Easy Sell Auto that financing remains when you request a vehicle appraisal. The buying team can discuss the vehicle and explain which next steps it can support for your situation. An appraisal enquiry does not settle a loan or guarantee a purchase.
Can I sell a car that still has a loan?
A remaining loan needs to be addressed as part of the proposed transaction. Your agreement, lender’s requirements, ownership and any registered interests matter. Before accepting an offer, ask the lender and buyer to explain how payment and release of the lender’s interest will be documented. If the vehicle is leased, mention that immediately: the ownership and buyout arrangements may differ from a loan.
Ask for a current lender payout
Ask your lender for the amount required to settle the loan on the intended sale date, how long that figure is valid and which payment instructions apply. Do not assume the balance on an older statement is the final payout. Confirm any applicable charges directly with the lender rather than estimating them yourself.
Keep the lender’s name and basic loan status ready for your conversation. Ask the buying team how to provide any necessary authorization or paperwork through an appropriate secure channel. The general appraisal form is a place for basic vehicle details, not identification documents or account numbers.
Understand positive and negative equity
Positive equity means the vehicle’s value is higher than the amount owed. Negative equity means the amount owed is higher than the vehicle’s value. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada explains that selling a vehicle for less than the outstanding loan can leave a difference that still needs to be covered. See its guide to car-loan financial risks.
For a simple illustration, a $25,000 agreed purchase price and $20,000 confirmed payout leave a $5,000 difference before any applicable agreed costs. Reverse those figures and there is a $5,000 shortfall. These examples are not vehicle valuations, lending offers or estimates of your proceeds.
Ask what would happen to any remaining proceeds or shortfall before committing. Do not assume that selling the vehicle automatically transfers the loan to another person or removes an unpaid balance.
What about a lien in Alberta?
A lien is a registered interest that can relate to a vehicle used as security. Alberta provides information about personal property liens and how to search the Personal Property Registry. Ask how any relevant registered interest will be checked and how release or discharge will be confirmed for your transaction.
A vehicle appraisal and confirmation of loan settlement are separate matters. Follow up with the lender about payment being applied and the relevant release documentation. Continue following your loan agreement and the lender’s instructions until settlement is confirmed.
Prepare for your appraisal conversation
Have the year, make, model, current kilometres, condition and known damage or repair history ready. Mention whether the ownership and loan documents involve multiple people or a business. Ask which documents and authorizations will be needed before an inspection or sale.
Before handing over the vehicle, confirm the written purchase terms, any inspection conditions, the payout figure being used, who is responsible for each payment, when any proceeds are paid and the evidence of completion you will receive. Discuss pickup or appointment arrangements directly with the team.
